Criminal Investigations Division

Responsibilities

The Criminal Investigations Division (CID) is responsible for all follow-up investigations and also handles the more time consuming or in depth cases.

Comprised of one sergeant and three officers who are all assigned as detectives, the CID officers will often take over cases after the initial investigation was handled through the Patrol Division.

Responsible for all aspects of investigations, CID officers are thoroughly trained in crime scene investigations, photography, latent print dusting and other various aspects of criminal investigations.

Narcotics Investigations

The CID also actively participates in narcotics investigations. Nags Head Police Department conducts narcotics investigations at the State and Federal levels. Joint narcotics investigations with other Municipalities, as well as County, State and Federal Agencies, occur regularly.

Identity Programs

The CID also takes part in the "Ident-a-kid" and "Operation ID" programs. The Ident-a-kid programs was instituted several years ago and is quite common in police departments.

Detectives will fingerprint small children at town functions so that they can be identified in the event of an emergency. These prints are given to the child's parents or guardians for safe keeping. The Operation ID program is another prevalent program within police departments. This program involves detectives going to someones home and inscribing the homeowners social security or driver's license number onto personal appliances. This inscription can help assist investigators return the item to the owner in the event an item is lost in a theft and later located.

Project Childsafe

Nags Head Police are also taking part in a new national program entitled "Project Childsafe." The goal of this program is to distribute gun lock safety kits to town residents at no cost in an attempt to promote gun safety. This program is funded by a U.S. Department of Justice grant and has additional funding provided by the firearms industry.
