Patrol Division

Services & Units

The Patrol Division is composed of the uniformed officers and serves as the front-line of law enforcement for the Town of Nags Head. As is the standard with most agencies, the Patrol Division is the "backbone" of the Police Department and is responsible for the most visible aspects of Law Enforcement. The Patrol Division is tasked with routine patrol, traffic enforcement, and are emergency first responders.

The Patrol Division also has additional units that operate within it, which include Bicycle Patrol, the K9 Unit, Animal Control and the School Resource Officer.

Bicycle Patrol Program

The Police Bicycle Patrol Program is composed of uniformed officers patrolling the Town of Nags Head by means of bicycle. The Bike Patrol Officers are often involved in special events, as well as patrolling in the residential communities, business and shopping areas.

K9 Unit

The Police K9 Unit is a program which incorporates two officers who are partnered with trained police canines (K9). The officers receive specialized training and become certified K9 handlers, and then begin patrolling with the K9 counterparts. The Nags Head Police K9 Unit is fortunate to have multifaceted canines which are trained in tracking, narcotics detection and apprehension.

Animal Control Program

The Animal Control Program is composed of a sworn police officer whose main functions relate to the various aspects of animal control. The Animal Control officer is responsible for the implementation, and operation, of effective animal control and protection strategies in the Town of Nags Head.

School Resource Officer

The School Resource Officer (SRO) is a sworn police officer who provides law enforcement and police services to Nags Head Elementary School, the school grounds and maintains a close partnership with school administrators in order to provide for a safe school environment. The SRO initiates interaction with students in the classroom and general areas of the school building, promotes the profession of police officer and is a positive role model for the students.
