Dark Skies, Bright Stars Initiative

Night Sky

A community-driven effort focused on reducing light pollution, the The Dark Skies, Bright Stars Initiative seeks to preserve the natural beauty of the night sky. By encouraging residents, businesses, and visitors to minimize unnecessary artificial lighting, the initiative aims to protect wildlife, enhance public health, and ensure that future generations can enjoy the stunning view of the stars. Through public participation, education, and thoughtful lighting practices, Nags Head seeks to balance the needs of modern living with environmental sustainability and the preservation of its coastal nightscape.

  • Use Shielded Lighting: Install outdoor light fixtures that direct light downward, preventing it from spreading upward into the night sky.
  • Switch to Low-Intensity Bulbs: Use lower-intensity, warm-colored LED bulbs (3000K or lower) that reduce glare and light spill.
  • Install Motion Sensors and Timers: Place motion sensors on outdoor lights, so they only activate when needed. Timers can also be used to turn off lights during late-night hours.
  • Close Curtains and Blinds: At night, draw curtains or blinds to prevent indoor light from leaking outside.
  • Turn Off Unnecessary Lights: Ensure all non-essential outdoor lighting, like porch or landscape lights, are switched off when not in use, especially after dark.
  • Use Smart Lighting: Invest in smart lighting systems that can be controlled remotely and adjusted to minimize light usage during nighttime hours.
  • Educate Others: Raise awareness among neighbors and businesses about the importance of reducing light pollution and the benefits of protecting the night sky for stargazing, wildlife, and the environment.
