- Water Meter Upgrade 2024
During the spring and summer of 2024, the Town will be upgrading our analog water meters to smart meters. We are doing this to improve both staff efficiency and our customers' billing experience.
Water meters in Nags Head are located outside the home, so owners will not need to be present during installation. Installers will work Monday – Friday from 8 am to 4:30 pm. There is a possibility they may also work a few Saturdays.
The Town has contracted with VEPO Metering to perform the installations. All VEPO employees will wear VEPO-branded attire and drive a vehicle marked "VEPO/Contractor for the Town of Nags Head.”
When a technician arrives for the installation, they will knock on the door to notify the customer that their water will be turned off for about 20 minutes. If no one is home, they will leave a door hanger on the front doorknob letting them know that their meter has been upgraded. Once the upgrade has taken place, please flush your water lines for one minute before resuming normal water use.
The new system of smart meters, known as Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) allows the meters to be read remotely through a wireless network, providing much more accurate water usage data and the ability to notify customers of leaks in real-time.
Online access to water usage data will be provided to customers through a portal called My Water Advisor 2.0. In addition to signing up for the portal, customers will also be able to download a free app that will allow for usage monitoring and receipt of leak alarms.
For questions about the installation of your new water meter, call 252-305-6425 or email Water Distribution Superintendent Ray Schoonmaker.
