Sanitation Cart Rollout Service 
May 1 - October 31

From May 1 through October 31 each year properties with driveways on South Virginia Dare Trail and South Old Oregon Inlet Road can participate in a sanitation cart rollout service.

What does this mean? During the time period above, a Town of Nags Head contractor, Trash Detail, will move a property’s sanitation carts from the home to the streetside the afternoon before collection and return them to the home after collection. Since the collection is twice per week, the contractor will be visiting each property four times a week for the six-month service period.

Note that outside of the May 1 to October 31 timeframe, carts will not be managed by the Town's contractor; therefore, cart management will again be the responsibility of the homeowner, renter, or rental management company. During this time, our staff will move carts back from the right-of-way; however, they do not return them to the home. 

We have placed stickers (see below) on the carts that are in the program. If you notice that any of your carts do not have a sticker, or if your property is new to the program and needs a sticker, please contact Public Services at 252-441-1122 and we will arrange for a sticker to be placed on your cart(s).

A fee for this service will appear on your annual Town of Nags Head tax bill.

Service Exclusion

We understand that some of our property owners live in their homes year-round and therefore can easily manage their sanitation carts. If this is the case with your property, please complete this exclusion form before June 1, 2024, to opt out of the service. This will be the only time you will be able to opt out of the service for the year. 

If you are currently receiving service and you choose to opt out, your service will be discontinued July 1, 2024. If you are not receiving service and you would like service, you do not need to do anything. However, your service will not begin until July 1, 2024. This is because the fee for the service is placed on your tax bill, which coincides with the Town’s fiscal year (July 1 to June 30).
