Nags Head Ocean Rescue will begin to reduce staffing starting August 16. Please also be prepared for rough surf and dangerous rip currents from Hurricane Ernesto, although the storm will remain well offshore.
Five stands will be REMOVED from the beach at the following accesses:
- Albatross
- Town Hall
- Grey Eagle
- Ida
- Limulus.
Ten stands will remain in place until Labor Day:
- Abalone
- Bonnett
- Hollowell
- Enterprise
- Epstein
- Forrest
- Gulfstream
- Hargrove
- Indigo
- Juncos
After Labor Day, three stands will remain in place until September 30:
Daily mobile units (trucks and ATV’s) will be based on available staff.

→ Hurricane Ernesto will remain a powerful hurricane and pass WELL to our east this weekend. However, large and powerful swells from Ernesto will produce strong rip currents, as well as several coastal threats over the next few days due to the higher than normal tides.
Flag Definitions
- Yellow – Medium hazard. Moderate surf and/or currents are present. Weak swimmers are discouraged from entering the water. For others, enhanced care and caution should be exercised.
- Red – High hazard. Rough conditions such as strong surf and/or currents are present. All swimmers are discouraged from entering the water. Those entering the water should take great care.
- Double Red – Water is closed to public use. Swimming in the Atlantic Ocean shall be unlawful. The term "swimming" is defined to mean and include any entry into the water of the Atlantic Ocean whether assisted by a raft, float, or other aid or device commonly used, but shall not include any entry assisted by a "surfboard" or "body board and fins.
