TOWN OF NAGS HEAD GROUND WATER AND WATER QUALITY LOGGER PROJECT

What the project is:

The Town of Nags Head adopted the Decentralized Wastewater Management Plan (DWMP) in the Spring of 2022. The purpose of the DWMP and the Septic Health Initiative is to establish the promotion and implementation of decentralized wastewater management strategies for residents, visitors, and neighboring coastal communities. The Plan is a dynamic and evolving resource, designed to help decentralized systems remain a sustainable component of Nags Head’s infrastructure.

A recommendation of the DWMP is to continue to monitor long-term groundwater table elevations in Nags Head by purchasing  remote groundwater data loggers and installing them in areas that are not adequately represented by existing wells (data gap),

The DWMP also recommends adding water quality and bacteria sample locations with remote loggers in various locations throughout the town. These loggers will be installed soon, and an updated map will be included.  Please stay tuned to this page as it is evolving with new information.

Future Initiatives

Once the ground water level and water quality loggers are installed, they will be reporting real time water data to our Hydromet Cloud. The town has also started mapping the locations of all septic tanks and drainfields in town in a geodatabase. The septic system infrastructure geodatabase will be updated to include permit data and inspection report information. The septic data and water level and water quality data will eventually be in one Septic Health Webmap and will be available to the public. Hopefully the town’s efforts to collect and publish accurate water level data, water quality data and septic health infrastructure data will lead to a better understanding of the correlation of septic infrastructure and water quality. This information will allow the town to better respond with greater educational outreach, policy changes, and possible maintenance and construction projects.
