Surveying contractor McKim & Creed will begin conducting our summer beach survey on Monday, June 16, 2025. They will be performing both land-based and water-based surveys, using a pickup truck with the McKim & Creed logo and a Kawasaki side-by-side mule. For the water-based surveys, they will use a 26'-28' survey vessel for hydrographic measurements. The survey boat may come close to shore during this process, so please do not be alarmed. The work is expected to take 7-10 days to complete, weather permitting. View previous beach surveys.

At their June 11 meeting, Nags Head's Board of Commissioners honored two individuals whose vision and dedication have profoundly shaped the town. The 2025 Lightkeeper Award was presented to J. Webb Fuller, former town manager and commissioner, whose leadership from 1982 to 2005 guided Nags Head through pivotal growth. Fuller played a key role in critical projects such as the development of oceanfront ordinances, the creation of the Town’s capital improvement program, and bringing vital institutions including The Outer Banks Hospital, Nags Head Elementary School, and the YMCA, to Nags Head. His lasting impact on everything from infrastructure to environmental initiatives reflects his deep commitment to preserving Nags Head’s coastal identity. The 2025 Nags Header Award was posthumously awarded to Dr. Bruce R. Bortz, a longtime town employee whose scientific expertise and dedication to environmental preservation quietly shaped the character of Nags Head for decades. From helping author national award-winning mitigation plans to guiding sustainable development and establishing architectural and environmental standards, Bortz’s influence can be seen throughout the town. Though he passed away in February, his legacy endures in the open spaces, beach access, and resilient policies that continue to define the community.

"Nags Head Ocean Rescue is doing incredibly heroic things on a daily basis — and we don’t always get to witness that.” That insight comes from local photographer Cyndi Sarfan, who happened to capture a dramatic rescue through her lens, and it perfectly captures the spirit of our new short film, Service and Heroism: The Nags Head Ocean Rescue Story, premiering Tuesday, July 15, 2025 at 7 p.m. at Jennette's Pier. This film offers an honest, behind-the-scenes look at the lifeguards who protect our beaches: their training, their teamwork, and the intense, often life-or-death moments they face every season. You’ll hear directly from the guards who’ve made rescues and from people who are here today because of them. After the screening, stick around for a panel and Q&A with local and regional ocean rescue leaders, as well as some of the voices featured in the film. Admission is free, but space is limited so please register in advance. Come out, be inspired, and help us celebrate the people who make a difference when it matters most. Experience the story. Learn how to stay safe. Feel the impact. View a new film trailer we released this week.
