NC School Bus Stop Law

Students are back in school, which means school buses are back on the roads. It's crucial to know and follow the laws about stopping for school buses—it's not just a rule, it's about protecting lives.

Remember to slow down and obey the speed limit in all school zones, especially on South Croatan Highway near Nags Head Elementary. Your careful driving makes a world of difference. Thank you for helping to keep our children safe!

Sea Oat Planting Taking Place

A Town of Nags Head contractor has started planting sea oats on oceanfront properties between Bonnett Street and the town's southern boundary.

The project is taking place in the town's beach nourishment project area, from 2919 South Virginia Dare Trail south through 10435 South Old Oregon Inlet Road. The work should take about two weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Beach plantings, such as sea oats, are a natural method that helps stem coastal erosion and flooding by trapping sand to build protective dunes.

If you have any questions about the project, please contact Town Engineer David Ryan at David.Ryan@NagsHeadNC.gov.

Labor Day 2024 office and sanitation collection schedule

There is no change to our residential sanitation collection schedule (including curbside recycling) due to the Labor Day holiday. However, all town administrative offices will be closed Monday, September 2. Our bulk/brush collection yard will also be closed that day.

A reminder:  the curbside bulk item/brush collection service begins again October 1. Please do not place items out for collection prior to that date. Thank you!

Public Input Session ADUs September 18, 2024

The Town of Nags Head will hold a public input session on September 18 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. to discuss the topic of accessory dwelling units (ADUs) within the town. This session aims to gather community feedback and provide information on potential changes to ADU regulations. Why can't plastic bags go into the recycling bin? Beneath this mess is an important piece of sorting equipment called a mechanical screen. Mechanical screens help sort through recyclables. Why can't plastic bags go into the recycling bin?

Beneath this mess is an important piece of sorting equipment called a mechanical screen.

Mechanical screens help sort through recyclables. Nonrecyclable items such as hoses, tarps, and plastic bags get tangled around the shaft of a mechanical screen and must be removed by hand.

Thank you for recycling right!
