If you are an oceanfront property owner or a sand relocation contractor, please attend a meeting about our Sand Relocation Program TONIGHT, Wednesday, October 11, 2023. The meeting will be held from 6 to 7 pm in the Nags Head Board of Commissioners room at 5401 South Croatan Highway. Equipment operators who attend this meeting will be placed on a list of sand relocation contractors that is provided to property owners at their request. We do not recommend specific contractors; we provide the list solely to help our property owners obtain assistance with sand relocation. In addition to Planning and Development staff, Town Engineer David Ryan and members of our finance department will be on hand to answer questions. For more information on the meeting, contact Environmental Planner Conner Twiddy at 252-449-6047 or Conner.Twiddy@NagsHeadNC.gov.

Two important notes regarding the NC Department of Transportation's traffic signal lights on South Croatan Highway in Nags Head. - You have likely noticed that traffic signal timing in the north end of town has been off. We have good news about this: the NC Department of Transportation's contractor is working on the issue. The milling of the highway's side streets, which has to be completed ahead of the repaving, caused the traffic signal loops to revert back to their default timing settings. Please know that the issue is being addressed.
- Pedestrians: Don't take traffic stopping on the highway as your cue to start crossing the road! Wait until you see the ?pedestrian crossing signal illuminate before heading into the crosswalk. Just because one side of the road has a red light does not mean you are free to go. Traffic could still have the green light on the other side of the street. Wait for the pedestrian crossing signal to illuminate!

If you missed the premier of the Ash Wednesday Storm mini documentary (and not many of you did, we had an incredible crowd!), be sure to watch a video of the Question and Answer session that took place after the video aired. We had so many incredible stories that we have enough for another video! Haven't seen the actual documentary? It's only 30 minutes long, so it won't take much time to view it. The stories in the video are frightening reminders that we must always be prepared for strong storms on the Outer Banks. For example, don't get caught waiting until the last minute to make sure your home is protected from storm damage. Whether you live in the Outer Banks year-round or own a second home here, protecting your property is essential. Even homes in areas that generally do not flood can be damaged due to flash flooding from rain, high groundwater levels and the naturally low island topography of the Outer Banks. It is important to know the hazards that may exist for your property and what steps you can take to prepare your property and your family to reduce the risk of flood damages. Visit DareNC.com/Flood for more information regarding planning for flood hazards and flood zones in Dare County.

Safe Costumes for a Safe Halloween 1. Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors. 2. Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision. 3. Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers. 4. When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls.

Did you know that a single pizza box can contaminate an entire curbside bin of recyclables? Grease and oils bind to the cardboard preventing it from being recycled. To help keep contaminated items from being mixed with correct items, please place your pizza boxes in your waste bin. Thanks for recycling right, Nags Head. We appreciate it. If you don't have time to haul your recyclables to the recycling centers we have at town hall (5401 South Croatan Highway) and our public services facility (2200 Lark Avenue), subscribe to the curbside recycling collection service offered by TFC Recycling. The cost is only $10.33/month thanks to a $5/month subsidy from the Town.
