Always plug your space heater into a wall outlet. Never plug your space heater into a power strip or extension cord.

Always plug your space heater into a wall outlet. Never plug your space heater into a power strip or extension cord.

Most power strips and extension cords are not designed to meet the power needs of a space heater. The heater requires more power than strips or extension cords are designed to handle. They will literally meltdown and start fires. When in doubt, read the safety information that came with your space heater for the manufacturer recommendations.

When preparing for a severe winter storm, consider that power may go out for many days. Outages during severe cold can be especially difficult.

While the current weather forecast is for mostly rain (and maybe a little sleet) this weekend, there’s still a lot of winter left. It’s important to be prepared for severe winter storms, especially since power outages can last for many days. Outages during extreme cold can be especially dangerous. Stay safe by taking these steps:

  • Close and seal windows and doors.
  • Don’t use a gas stove for heat.
  • Run generators outside, away from buildings.
  • Have a plan for medications and medical devices.

Be winter ready.
