At Wednesday’s Board of Commissioners meeting, Mayor Pro Tem Mike Siers was recognized for eight years of  service to Nags Head, particularly as a champion for its taxpayers and business owners.

Following the recognition, Mayor Ben Cahoon and Commissioner Bob Sanders were sworn in to new four-year terms, and the Board welcomed new members Molly Harrison and Megan Vaughan, both bringing valuable Planning Board experience. Commissioner Megan Lambert was sworn in as the new Mayor Pro Tem.

Moving forward the Board and Town staff will continue working to protect the qualities that make Nags Head a community people are proud to call home and a place visitors will want to return to year after year.

Beach Nourishment Update

Beach Nourishment Update

Town Engineer David Ryan presented the beach nourishment project bids to Nags Head's Board of Commissioners at their December 3 meeting. View David's presentation.

Next Steps

  1. At their December 17 adjourned session, the Board will review results of the Fall 2025 Beach Condition Survey, as well as discuss the bid results and project financing. The meeting will be held at 9 a.m. in the Board of Commissioners Room at 5401 South Croatan Highway. It will also be livestreamed on the Town's YouTube channel.
  2. At their January 7 meeting, the Board will consider the bid award. This meeting will also be livestreamed and available for viewing later.

As are reminder, our next beach nourishment project will will place sand on the beach from 2919 South Virginia Dare Trail south to the town line adjacent to Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

While receiving bids marks a major milestone, additional analysis and decision-making remain before we can confirm the project’s construction timeframe. As with past nourishment efforts, work will likely occur sometime between April and late summer in either 2026 or 2027.

We encourage property owners to watch these meetings to stay informed as the project progresses.

Agendas are posted prior to each Board of Commissioners meeting.

Fire Engineer Richard Gibbons with Nags Head's Board of Commissioners on December 3, 2025

At Wednesday's Nags Head Board of Commissioners meeting, Fire Engineer Richard Gibbons was honored for 20 years of service to Nags Head.

Known for his humility and kindness, among his other duties, Richard has a particular skill and passion for large animal rescue, which is work that demands both steady hands and a compassionate heart. During the Board meeting, Fire Chief Wells shared a memorable example of Richard’s ability to remain calm under pressure: the day he unflinchingly removed a 7-foot snake from a car’s backseat, demonstrating both bravery and composure.

We thank Richard for his decades of service, his courage, and his unwavering care for people and animals alike.

2025 North Atlantic Hurricane Season Graphic from NWS Morehead City

November 30 marked the end of the 2025 hurricane season. According the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Newport/Morehead City, we ended up with a near average season this year with 13 named storms. While there were no US hurricane landfalls this year, there were some memorable storms, with Hurricane Erin bringing impactful coastal conditions to Hatteras Island this year even with it being centered a few hundred miles offshore!

Hurricanes get all the attention, but, as we've seen this year, nor'easters can be damaging, too. Not sure if you believe us? Watch our video about the Ash Wednesday Storm of 1962, which was a slow moving nor'easter, and it's devastating effects on Nags Head. Yes, we have better weather warning technology these days, but a storm sitting off our coast for several tide cycles can still be harmful.
