We stand in opposition to a potential amendment that could be introduced to House Bill 442 as early as later today, which would prohibit shrimp trawling within a half mile of the Atlantic shoreline and in all inshore fishing waters.

On June 19, the North Carolina Senate passed House Bill 442 with an amendment to prohibit shrimp trawling within a half mile of the Atlantic shoreline and across all inshore fishing waters. The measure moves next to the North Carolina House of Representatives.

Such a measure could irreparably harm a vital part of the Outer Banks economy, disrupt the livelihoods of local fishermen, and bypass the established authority of the Marine Fisheries Commission. It would also introduce new penalties for violations, including the potential loss of fishing licenses and forfeiture of catch.

We believe any new regulations aimed at protecting marine ecosystems should be crafted in partnership with regulatory agencies, scientists, and the fishing community. A rushed, sweeping ban is not the answer.

We urge residents to contact our area legislators  and voice your support for our local fishing industry:

Senator Bobby Hanig

Representative Ed Goodwin

Phone: (252) 482-8168

Representative Keith Kidwell

Phone: (919) 733-5881

Your voice matters. Let’s stand together to protect our coastal heritage.

Independence Day 2025 Sanitation Collection and Office Schedule

There is no change to our sanitation collection schedule (including curbside recycling) due to the 4th of July holiday; however, our brush/bulk trash collection yard will be closed Friday, the 4th.

View our 2025 holiday sanitation schedule.

All town administrative offices will be closed in honor of the holiday.

Have a safe holiday and remember to leave the fireworks to the professionals as all consumer fireworks are prohibited in Nags Head.

4th of July Fireworks at Nags Head Pier at 9:25 pm - Rain Date is July 5

Leave the fireworks to the professionals!

In conjunction with the Nags Head Fishing Pier and the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau, we're hosting a fireworks spectacular Friday, July 4, 2025 at 9:25 p.m. on Nags Head Pier at Mile Post 11.5 on South Virginia Dare Trail.

A rain date has been set for Saturday, July 5. The fireworks display will last approximately 25 minutes.

Parking at and near the fireworks display site will be directed by the Nags Head Police Department. Those attending the show are encouraged to park east of U.S. Highway 158/South Croatan Highway and use designated crosswalks. Those choosing to park west of U.S. Highway 158/South Croatan Highway should use extreme caution while attempting to cross this heavily traveled roadway and use designated crosswalks.

There is no parking on NC12/South Virginia Dare Trail and no parking, even temporarily, on any part of the multi-use path.

All persons attending this event are reminded not to use or block private driveways. Vehicles blocking driveways or presenting a traffic hazard before, during, or immediately following this event will be towed.

The Town of Nags Head requests that persons use the public beach accesses as pathways to the oceanfront. Please stay off the environmentally sensitive dune and do not use the private property of others, such as private gazebos or decks, to view the fireworks without the property owner’s permission.

No vehicles, with the exception of authorized Town and emergency vehicles, will be allowed on the ocean front beaches.

The following public beach accesses are recommended for access to the beach for fireworks viewing:

South of Nags Head Fishing Pier

  •     Curlew Street
  •     Hollowell Street
  •     Conch Street

North of Nags Head Fishing Pier

  • Bladen Street
  • Bittern Street
  • Bonnett Street
  • Blackman Street

At the conclusion of the fireworks, spectator, pedestrian, and vehicular traffic exiting the area will be directed and controlled by Nags Head police officers.

The Town of Nags Head wishes to express its gratitude to Andy and Lovie McCann and the entire staff of the Nags Head Fishing Pier for agreeing to co-host this event and to the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau for their generous grant.

Service and Heroism: The Nags Head Ocean Rescue Story Premiers July 15 at 7 pm

Be sure to register soon if you plan to attend the premier of our new short film, Service and Heroism: The Nags Head Ocean Rescue Story, on Tuesday, July 15, 2025 at 7 p.m. at Jennette's Pier.

The film provides an authentic, behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of beach lifeguards: their rigorous training, strong camaraderie, and the high-stakes situations they regularly confront. You’ll hear firsthand from the guards who’ve performed rescues, as well as from those whose lives were saved by them.

After the screening, stick around for a panel and Q&A with local and regional ocean rescue leaders, as well as some of the voices featured in the film.

Admission is free, but space is limited so please register in advance.
