The N.C. Forest Service's state-wide burn ban remains in effect until further notice. Therefore, permits for beach pit fires will not be issued until the ban has been lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire. The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within that 100 feet.

News from the Network for Endangered Sea Turtles Did you know that only 1 in 1,000 sea turtle hatchlings make it to adulthood? These tiny turtles face many challenges, from predators to ocean pollution. But together, we can give them a fighting chance! Here’s how you can help: - Keep beaches clean—pick up trash and fill in holes.
- Turn off beachfront lights at night to prevent hatchling disorientation.
- Respect marked nests and give turtles space.
EVERY action makes a difference! Let’s work together to protect these incredible creatures. Remember, if you visit the beach, never go near a sea turtle or shine lights on them at night. And please, when you leave, keep the beach clean, flat, and dark. And don't forget, if you're in the northern Outer Banks and accidentally hook a sea turtle, see a sea turtle on the beach, or crawl tracks in the sand, please IMMEDIATELY call the Network for Endangered Sea Turtles hotline at 252-441-8622.

Many recyclable items are made of natural materials, but recycling and composting are not the same. Now that spring has arrived, remember while sprucing up your gardens and lawns that yard debris and plants do not belong in the recycle bins. View a reference guide on what can and cannot go into our recycling containers. If you don't have time to haul your recyclables to the recycling centers we have at Town Hall (5401 South Croatan Highway) and our Public Services facility (2203 Lark Avenue), be sure to subscribe to the curbside recycling collection service offered by TFC Recycling. The cost is only $13.35/month.
