Note to subscribers about this email: in the near future, these weekly updates will come from a new email address: listserv@civicplus.com, instead of the custom address we use now, which includes "Town of Nags Head Public Information" in the address. This modification is due to changes that Google and Yahoo have made to better protect their users from spam and unwanted emails. The change will take place sometime this month. Please keep reading these emails. Having informed stakeholders means our little slice of paradise remains a healthy, vibrant, and well-managed community. If you have recommendations on additional Nags Head-related information you would like us to share through this emails, please email Public Information Officer Roberta Thuman.

A reminder: there are only a few days left to submit your comments to the NC Rules Commission ahead of their April 8 meeting, at which they will consider crucial land management tools. As we mentioned earlier this week, recently many of you submitted comments to the North Carolina Coastal Resources Commission, asking them to reinstate rules that protect the designation of Jockey's Ridge State Park as an Area of Environmental Concern. Thank you for submitting comments. Due in part to your efforts those rules were re-adopted by the CRC. Now the rules are about to go before the NC Rules Commission. This is part of the process, and was expected. It is very important and urgent that the NC Rules Commission also hear from you. The Rules Commission will hold a special meeting Monday, April 8 at 10 a.m. to consider these rules. View the meeting agenda and the watch the meeting April 8. Comments MUST be submitted to rrc.comments@oah.nc.gov by 5 pm Sunday, April 7.

The pier at our estuarine access on the US 64 Nags Head - Manteo causeway is closed for about four months while it is being replaced. **The vehicular access and access to the kayak launch will stay open with the pier closed to the public. This is expected to last 2-3 weeks, weather permitting. Once lumber is delivered, the contractor will need additional area to store material. No parking will be available, and the kayak launch will be closed, along with the pier. Once the framing gets further along, there may be an opportunity to open a portion of the parking and kayak launch. This is expected to be 3-4 weeks, weather permitting. The contractor will also do what they can to open access on the weekends and holidays, space permitting. Stay tuned for updates on the progress and reopening date! Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work to enhance our estuarine access pier for everyone's enjoyment.

Have you applied for your 2024 Dare County reentry permit? When a mandatory evacuation is issued to ensure public safety (think hurricanes), individuals must present a current reentry permit* (along with a valid corresponding ID) and follow a staged reentry process. For more detailed information—and to obtain your 2024 reentry permit—please visit www.DareNC.gov/Reentry. *Expired reentry permits from previous years will not be accepted. All Dare County residents are welcome to apply for a reentry permit; however, a valid ID that contains a Dare County address is sufficient on its own for local residents, and a reentry permit is optional, not necessary, for residents.

Tax season is underway, and the Dare County Tax Department would like to remind citizens about the following three property tax relief programs authorized by the State of North Carolina that provide property tax exclusions for qualifying seniors age 65 and older, disabled individuals and disabled U.S. veteran homeowners who meet the requirements specified by the North Carolina General Statutes. - Seniors & Disabled Program: Homeowners who are age 65 and older or 100 percent disabled can receive an assessment reduction of $25,000 or up to 50 percent off their home value, whichever is greater, if they meet certain income (gross income of $36,700 or less in 2023) and ownership requirements. Married couples may qualify even if only one partner is age 65 or older or disabled. This tax relief benefit does not need to be repaid.
- Circuit Breaker Tax Deferment Program: Seniors, as well as those who are 100 percent disabled, who have owned and occupied their home for more than five years may choose this program, which ensures their property tax bill will not be more than 4 percent or 5 percent of their income. Homeowners may have to repay some of this tax relief benefit, for example, if they move or sell their home.
- Disabled Veterans Program: Veterans with a 100 percent total and permanent service-connected disability, or their unmarried, surviving spouse, can receive a $45,000 assessment reduction, regardless of income. This tax relief benefit does not need to be repaid. A certification form must be completed in addition to the application.
To qualify for any of these programs, you must be a resident of Dare County who owns and occupies your home as your primary residence as of January 1, 2024. Property owners must file an application for exclusion by the June 1, 2024 filing deadline. For detailed information about each program and the requirements that must be met in order to qualify, please visit www.DareNC.gov/TaxRelief or click the button below to download a brochure.

Shoe boxes, pasta containers, Amazon boxes... all common cardboard items. In the U.S. alone, around 100 billion cardboard boxes are produced every year. Recycling one ton of that cardboard saves approximately nine cubic yards of landfill space! Thank you for recycling right! If you don't have time to haul your recyclables to the recycling centers we have at town hall (5401 South Croatan Highway) and our public services facility (2200 Lark Avenue), subscribe to the curbside recycling collection service offered by TFC Recycling. The cost is only $10.33/month thanks to a $5/month subsidy from the Town.
