We've taken another significant step towards ensuring the health and sustainability of our groundwater and water quality! As part of our commitment to environmental stewardship, we've recently installed groundwater and water quality monitoring loggers throughout the town. Why is this important, you ask? These loggers were part of a recommendations from our Decentralized Wastewater Management Plan and will play a crucial role in enhancing the frequency of water quality sampling for nitrate nitrogen (NO3) and Enterococci samples across Nags Head (Enterococci sampling will still have to be performed manually). Nitrates are essential plant nutrients, but in excess amounts they can cause significant water quality problems. Enterococci, being the primary indicator of septic failures, is especially significant for beach closures. By investing in these loggers, we're taking a proactive approach to safeguard our community and its vulnerable coastal environment. The loggers are equipped with remote sensing capabilities powered by solar panels, showcasing our commitment to sustainable practices. Upon completion of this project, the Town will boast a network of 8 groundwater and 16 water quality data loggers, all remotely monitored through a state-of-the-art cloud-based platform. The groundwater level loggers run off an internal battery, but the water quality loggers have the solar panels and an external battery. This advanced system will allow us to stay vigilant about the health of our water sources and take prompt action when needed. Thank you for your ongoing support! Together, we're making strides towards a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future for our beloved town.
