After some scattered showers and storms move through this afternoon, a more significant severe thunderstorm threat may develop later today over ENC. The severe weather parameters in place are quite rare for August, and could yield damaging wind gusts of 60-75 mph, large hail, and a few tornadoes. Stay tuned to our local National Weather Service office web site for later updates.

Thanks to all who have come out this summer to support our concert series. Even though some of the Wednesday nights have been hot, the park always seems to have a nice breeze blowing through it. It's hard to beat sitting in your beach chair, with the sound of kids playing in the distance and the talented tunes of the band relaxing you. 

Next week, Mamma's Black Sheep will be playing Dowdy Park August 16 at 6:30 pm. 

Mercy Creek will lighting up the stage on August 23 at 6:30 pm and SoulOne will finish out the summer concert series on August 30 at 6:30 pm. (We reserve the right to add more concerts, if we can!)

Dowdy Park is located at 3005 South Croatan Highway. If you have to drive, please park in the lot at Nags Head Elementary School. 

Don't forget we have one more farmer's market at Dowdy Park, on Thursday, August 17 from 9 am to 1 pm.

Also, we have free yoga classes every Tuesday at 7:30 am through October 31.

Waterspouts fall into two categories: fair weather waterspouts and tornadic waterspouts.

Tornadic waterspouts are tornadoes that form over water, or move from land to water. They have the same characteristics as a land tornado. They are associated with severe thunderstorms, and are often accompanied by high winds and seas, large hail, and frequent dangerous lightning.

Fair weather waterspouts usually form along the dark flat base of a line of developing cumulus clouds. This type of waterspout is generally not associated with thunderstorms. While tornadic waterspouts develop downward in a thunderstorm, a fair weather waterspout develops on the surface of the water and works its way upward. By the time the funnel is visible, a fair weather waterspout is near maturity. Fair weather waterspouts form in light wind conditions so they normally move very little.

If a waterspout moves onshore, the National Weather Service issues a tornado warning, as some of them can cause significant damage and injuries to people. Typically, fair weather waterspouts dissipate rapidly when they make landfall, and rarely penetrate far inland.
