Outer Banks Shoreline Management - Nags Head Beach Nourishment 2019

Beach Nourishment Project Update

Due to a problem with the submerged pipe just north of MP 15, the dredge is currently working at another subline further south, near Mile Post 16, just north of Jennette's Pier. Progress will continue north from the subline near MP 16  until the subline north of MP 15 is repaired.  Then, construction is planned to move back to the MP 15 subline so construction can continue to move south about 5,000 feet. However, these plans could change and we'll let you know if they do.

We will begin installing sand fencing and sprigging to stabilize the new beach next week in the south end of Nags Head. Work will only take place during the day and there should be little interference with beach activities.

Thank you for your patience! We're excited about our new beach and hope you are, too.

News From Nags Head Woods Preserve - 2019 Bow Hunting Season

The Nature Conservancy allows bow hunting for white-tailed deer in the Nags Head Woods Preserve; the annual hunt is designed to manage the deer herd and to ensure the herd’s health.  The regular hunting season runs September 7, 2019 through January 1, 2020. Interested hunters must attend an orientation session and complete an application form which includes a $50 fee (to cover the cost of hunt administration and liability insurance).  All orientation sessions are held at Nags Head Woods Preserve, 701 West Ocean Acres Drive, Kill Devil Hills.  Please call (252) 441-2525 with any questions.
If you are visiting Nags Head Woods as a non-hunter (i.e. if you are hiking, running, or fishing), always respect our year-round regulations: stay on designated hiking trails and keep dogs leashed.  Hunters have specific safety zones and are not allowed to hunt within 100 yards of designated hiking trails.  We appreciate your consideration of the various ways the public uses and enjoys Nags Head Woods.
Hunter Orientation Sessions schedule:

  • Wednesday August 21, 5:30 p.m.
  • Thursday August 22, 8:00 a.m.
