Reminder! We'll be premiering the mini documentary titled, “The Ash Wednesday Storm in Nags Head" tomorrow, Thursday, September 14, at 2:30 pm at Jennette's Pier. Watch the documentary's trailer. The event is free and open to the public. Immediately following the premier of the 30-minute-long video, a question and answer opportunity will take place. Funded by a grant from CurrentTV and produced by Rayolight Productions, the documentary features several never-before-documented stories of survival of the storm, which is estimated to have destroyed, or significantly damaged, thousands of homes along the East Coast. If you aren't familiar with the storm, over several days in March 1962, an unusual combination of weather elements caused a massive storm to slowly churn off the East Coast. Over five high tide cycles, Nags Head residents fought for their lives. Those unable to attend the premiere can watch the documentary later on CurrentTV’s YouTube channel or the Town of Nags Head's YouTube channel.

From our local National Weather Service Office - Even though Hurricane Lee is well offshore, the storm is pushing dangerous surf, in the form of long-period swells, our way. Long-period swells are waves that are produced by strong, prolonged storms (like Hurricane Lee) over a large expanse of water. They travel faster and deeper than short-period swells, and have more energy and a flatter profile. Don't be fooled by these waves. They are dangerous. Don't go in the water. These conditions are expected to last into the weekend.

Beginning the week of September 18, a contractor for Dominion Energy will be upgrading the electric meters in Nags Head with smart meters. Dominion's installers will notify you by providing a door hanger. Dominion Energy has partnered with Aclara to provide standard (residential and smaller commercial) meter exchange services. Dominion Energy full-time metering personnel handle non-standard installations, such as medium and large commercial and industrial accounts. The Aclara technician will wear a Dominion Energy badge and drive a vehicle identified as an authorized contractor for Dominion Energy. At most sites, a field metering technician will be at your property for 10 minutes or less. During this time, there will be a short interruption to the electric service. Should you bag your holiday recyclables? No bags in the recycling bin, please! Plastic bags are made of thin plastic that tear and tangle within sorting equipment not designed to process this type of plastic. Simply place your recyclable directly into your curbside recycle bin. Thanks for recycling right, Nags Head. We appreciate it. If you don't have time to haul your recyclables to the recycling centers we have at town hall (5401 South Croatan Highway) and our public services facility (2200 Lark Avenue), subscribe to the curbside recycling collection service offered by TFC Recycling. The cost is only $10.33/month thanks to a $5/month subsidy from the Town.
