Michael Silverman Appointed as Town Manager

At their May 5, 2021 meeting, Nags Head’s Board of Commissioners appointed Michael C. Silverman as the new town manager.

The current city manager of Pascagoula, a city of 22,000 residents on Mississippi’s coast, Silverman, a North Carolina native, will assume his role on July 1, 2021. He is filling the position that will be vacated when Interim Town Manager Greg Sparks returns to his retirement June 5, 2021.

“Michael clearly has the leadership skills we were seeking,” said Nags Head Mayor Ben Cahoon. “He was chosen from among 63 applicants because of the passion he exhibited for his vocation and the level of professionalism he exhibited during his interviews. “In addition to managing a $23 million budget and 195 employees in Pascagoula, Michael also served as the Caro, Michigan city manager. His energy and enthusiastic approach to municipal management make him the ideal choice to lead our town. We’re looking forward to a long and successful partnership to continue our excellence in government service.”

Mayor Cahoon continued, “On behalf of the Board and the employees of the Town, I would also like to thank Greg Sparks for coming out of retirement and moving across the country to assist us over the last year.”

Developmental Associates of Chapel Hill assisted in the search to fill the manager vacancy.

“I am excited to take the helm of a town that lies on the beautiful Outer Banks and is in my home state, not to mention that it has a long history of efficient management and progressive thinking,” said Silverman. “I can’t wait to meet the community and get to know the Town’s employees so we can work together to carry out the vision established by Nags Head’s Board, ensuring that the town is the best community it can be.”

Silverman holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from UNC Wilmington and a Master of Public Administration from UNC Chapel Hill.

In addition to his municipal experience, Silverman has also worked with North Carolina legislators on critical issues such as economic development and criminal justice.

Silverman’s salary will be $150,000 plus benefits.

Blue Cart Recycling Collection Starts March 15

Curbside Recycling and New Sanitation Collection Routes and Schedule Became Effective May 1

Although the sanitation schedule just changed May 1,  we wanted to remind you of the new collection routes and the schedule that became effective that day. In addition, don't forget you can subscribe to the $9/month curbside recycling service from TFC Recycling. Note that TFC requires a two-year contract.

Keep in mind that the schedule will remain the same all year long!

  • If you subscribe to the curbside recycling program through TFC, your blue recycling carts, which now have yellow stickers on them, will be emptied on Mondays.
  • If you are on our blue sanitation route, your green trash carts will be emptied on Mondays and Thursdays.
  • If you are on the green sanitation route, your green trash carts will be emptied on Tuesdays and Fridays.

More information, including a route map, is available on our web site. For a quick summary, watch our own Sanitation Equipment Operator DeRonte White explain the changes.

To subscribe to the curbside recycling program, visit TFC Recycling's web site.

Blue Carts
Please remember that to limit confusion on how carts may be used, we're collecting the blue recycling carts from each residence and reissuing them (with a yellow recycling sticker on the lids) to those households subscribing through TFC. Our goal is for only those properties in the subscription program to have recycling carts.

Be sure to place your blue recycling cart by the road so we may collect them. We've already collected 3,500 carts; a big thanks to those of you who have set them out. We appreciate it.

NC Gov Cooper

News From Governor Cooper

Governor Cooper signed Executive Order 209 outlining safety measures for the month of May. Executive Order 209 took effect April 30 and is set to expire June 1. As more North Carolinians get vaccinated and adhere to safety protocols over the course of the next month, the state  anticipates lifting more restrictions on June 1 .

Under the Executive Order, masks are still required indoors but are no longer mandated outdoors. Masks are still strongly recommended outdoors by NCDHHS in crowded areas and higher risk settings where social distancing is difficult. The Order also increases mass gathering capacity limits. The number of people who may gather indoors was increased from 50 to 100 and the number of people who may gather outdoors increased from 100 to 200. Occupancy limits currently in place will remain the same.
