Community Clean Up March 28 2020
Census Gets Underway March 12

News from Dare County - 2020 Census Gets Underway March 12

Starting March 12, Dare County households will begin receiving invitations from the U.S. Census Bureau with information on how to respond to the census online. Some households may also receive a paper questionnaire.

Every 10 years, the federal government must count each and every person living in the United States. Making sure you and your family are counted is one of the most powerful things you can do to support your community and shape the future for your neighbors. There are many ways census results affect your daily life: healthcare, education, childcare, emergency services, bridges and roadways, and other public services and programs.

For those that need access to a computer to respond to the census online, Dare County is providing 11 locations where computers will be available for public use.

Dare County libraries will have computers available throughout the entire census response period during their normal hours of operation.
  • Kill Devil Hills Library
  • Manteo Library
  • Hatteras Library
From March 30-April 3, the following locations will have a computer available during their normal business hours:
  • Nags Head Town Hall (8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.)
  • Duck Town Hall (9 a.m. - 5 p.m.)
  • Southern Shores Town Hall (8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.)
  • Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce (9 a.m. - 5 p.m.)
  • Thomas A. Baum Senior Center (8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.)
  • Dare County Center (8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.)
  • Dare County Social Services Manteo Campus (8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.)
  • Frisco Planning Department Office (8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.)

These locations and public devices will not be staffed by an employee or representative of the Census Bureau. Staff may be available on-site to direct you to the online questionnaire; however, no one will be able to complete or fill out the questionnaire for you.

If you have trouble completing the census online, you may respond by phone or by paper form via mail. Beginning May 1, an official Census Bureau employee will visit your home if you have not responded. More information on ways to respond can be found on the U.S. Census Bureau website here: Ways to Respond.

Make the pledge now to count everyone living in your household (even babies) for the 2020 Census. To learn more about the census and why it’s important for Dare County, visit www.DareNC.com/census.
