Free Septic Inspections

Septic Flyer 2018_1_Page_1

“The Town of Nags Head is a unique coastal community built upon a legacy rooted in shared values, including our most recognized common bond – a love for the Outer Banks… We uphold our legacy by providing residents and visitors with excellent public services and well-maintained recreational amenities; and ensuring access to a well-protected natural coastal environment.”

Town of Nags Head Vision Statement, 2017 Comprehensive Plan

As residents and property owners in the Town, we all share a duty to protect our critical natural resources and coastal ecosystem, which is paramount to continuing the legacy that we all love and cherish; the beaches, the ocean and sound waters. Part of this duty is to ensure that our septic systems are properly maintained to minimize impacts to the water quality of our surface waters. Over 85% of the Town's residential properties are served by a septic system to treat wastewater. Under current state statutes, any person owning or controlling a property with a septic system is responsible for its maintenance, which can include inspection, pumping, and repair.

The Town of Nags Head Septic Health Initiative has been active for nearly 20 years helping property owners perform these vital maintenance activities. Upon request, the Town will conduct a free inspection of your system and will provide you with a report including recommendations for maintenance. If you need to pump your tank, the Town will provide you with credit on your water bill to offset part of this expense. Finally, if you need to repair or replace your system, the Town offers a low-interest loan to cover this entire cost.

Please help us keep Nags Head and its cherished recreational waters clean by participating in the Septic Health Program. To find out more, visit www.nagsheadnc.gov.  Under the “Services” tab select “Septic Health”.  Also, contact the Town’s Environmental Planner, Todd Krafft, at 252-449-6047 or todd.krafft@nagsheadnc.gov.

Thank you for your assistance in keeping Nags Head “a good place to live and a good place to visit!”
